Edward Irving McLaughlin

Son of Jane Irwin McLaughlin and Edward McLaughlin, an Indian fighter who served in the Revolutionary Army and was from a Scotch/Irish background, having been born in Londonderry, Ireland.
Husband of Elizabeth "Betsy" Nesbit McLaughlin, whom he married in 1813;
Edward and Betsy would have 10 children, but only 2 would survive beyond childhood..... Daughter Margaretta, who would marry Ayres, and William McLaughlin.
Edward was well educated and for many years was county surveyor of Rockbridge County, as well as working in that capacity for other counties.
Edward and wife Betsy taught their children religion on a daily basis, reading and memorizing the bible. The children were also taugh to respect history and mathematics.
Edward took his son William along with him on his surveying excursions, and William became his assitant; when William was sixteen, he decided that he would become a lawyer.....he would later be a distinguished Judge.
Edward McLaughlin was known by all in Rockbridge County; "he was recalled as a man of fine intellect, wonderful memory and sterling Democracy, traits of character which preeminently distinguished his son William".
Edward died at the age of 71 and is buried near other family and friends in the Old Lebanon Cemetery.
