Facts and Events
Edward Holyoke, ninth President of Harvard, was born at Boston on June 26, 1689, the son of Elizur and Mary (Elliot) Holyoke of that town. The father was a substantial merchant and a holder of town offices, and during Edward's undergraduate days sat in the House of Representatives. After being fitted for college at the North Grammar School, Edward was admitted on June 27, 1701, his admittatur being signed by President Increase Mather and Tutor Jabez Fitch, who probably examined him. No other Harvard student of his time has against his name the number of black marks which decorate the record of the future president. ...(From Colonial Collegians, Harvard, p. 1704)
