One interesting item in the article on Matthew Chambers Genealogy in History of Putnam Co., OH, pg. 10-11 is the claim that a Matthew Chambers descendant (son of Mary Chambers) named Edward S. Godfrey was a Lt. soldier under Gen. Geo. Custer and part of the company in the rear of the fatal June 1876 action that managed to escape the on-slaught with careful retreat. The story continues with events leading to Godfrey being awarded the Medal of Honor and survived to become a brigadier general before retirement in 1907 when he moved to Cookstown, NJ (this does not match his death date and place shown here from the Gilboa Gazette Sep. 11, 1981 article, pg 8). He was buried at Arlington National Cemetery; a veteran of the War of 1812 (this also indicates that there are some errors in assigning data to correct men). Of Irish ancestry according to Allen Co., OH Biographical data, pg 516. That source says he settled in Putnam Co. in 1838; first in Gilboa where he kept a store for years. These interesting stories bear added documentation, but daughter Mary did marry a C. M. Godfrey who could easily have had a son the needed age for this story.
