Edward Ashby was baptised on 17th February 1822 at Ayot St Lawrence in Hertfordshire, son of Elizabeth Ashby, formerly Hornet, and her husband William Ashby, a labourer. At the time of his baptism the family actually lived in the neighbouring parish of Kimpton. Edward appears in the 1841 census living at Great Cutts in the nearby parish of Wheathampstead, where he seems to have been living with his aunt (his mother's brother's widow) Mary Hornet. He has yet to be researched after 1841.
