About Edmund Charles Davis

Edmund Charles Davis was born in November 1822 in Middlesex, England [1861 England Census and 1900 U.S. Census], the son of Charles Edmund Davis (1786-1860) and his wife Charlotte Rigby (1786-1862)*. Edmund married Jane Hargreaves (1818-1863), daughter of Ralph Hargreaves (1786-1862) and his wife Jane. [Source: London Metropolitan Archives. London, England, Marriages and Banns, 1754-1921, Ancestry.com].

Edmund and his family are listed in the 1861 England Census as: Edmund Davies (age 38), Jane Davies (age 25); children: Edmund Davies (age 10), Alice J Davies (age 2), Charles Davies (age 3), Ralph Davies (age 11 months) and Jane's parents Ralph Hargreaves (age 75) and Jane Hargreaves (age 64). Edmund had several family members die within several years of each other: his daughter Mary Ann died in 1857, his father Charles died in 1860, his mother Charlotte died in 1862, his wife Jane died in 1863 and his youngest son Ralph died in 1869. Shortly thereafter, Edmund boarded the ship "European" in Liverpool, England and is listed on the ship's passenger list with his son Charles (age 11), arriving in Quebec, Canada on 10 September 1870. [Source: Canada. Passenger Lists, 1865-1935, Ancestry.com]. It should be noted that Edmund's eldest son Edmund Davis, Jr. had arrived the year before in New York on the ship "S.S. City of Brooklyn" which arrived in New York, New York on 10 March 1869. [Source: New York, Passenger Lists, 1820-1957, Ancestry.com].

By 1880, Edmund and his family had migrated to Butler County, Kansas and were listed in the 1880 U.S. Census as living in the township of Towanda. Edmund (age 57) was listed Edmund, Jr. (age 30), who did not marry until eight years after the 1880 Census. In 1900, Edmund (age 77) was still living with his son, Edmund, Jr. (age 50), his wife Eva F. Davis (age 29) and their children: Fay E. Davis (age 11), Alice E. Davis (age 9) and Edmund D. Davis (age 7). They were still living in Butler County, Kansas, listed as living in the town of nearby Milton.

Edmund Charles Davis passed away on 2 February 1904 in Whitewater, Butler County, Kansas and was buried in Whitewater Cemetery.

  • Note: several Ancestry Member Trees claim that Edmund Charles Davis' father Charles Edmund Davis married a "Charlotte Trayler", but marriage records clearly show that Charlotte Rigby was his wife. In addition, in the will of Charlotte's father, Thomas Rigby (1764-1819), proven 14 December 1819 in Stepney, Middlesex, England, he clearly names his daughter "Charlott Davis" and her husband "Charles Davis" in his will.
