Rev. Ebenezer Morse was born in Medfield, March 2, 1718/19 to Joshua and Mary Morse of Medfield.

Education

He graduated from Harvard College in 1737, where it is said he placed 23rd in a class of thirty-four. He continued his education receiving his Masters degree (M.A.) "in due course."

Revolutionary War

On May 23, 1775, at a town meeting of Shrewsbury, a committee of five was selected to examine him along with four others on the suspicion of harboring loyalist tendencies. The committee reported back a week later that Mr. Morse "appeared not to be so friendly to the common cause, as we could wish; but rather, in some instances, unfriendly."S1 As a result of this report, Rev. Ebenezer's arms and ammunition were confiscated and his movements restricted, "that the said Morse do not pass over the lines of the 2d Parish in Shrewsbury, on any occasion whatever, without a permit from two or more of the Committee (of Safety) of said precinct." S1 In June 1775, he was dismissed by the parishioners of his church and excluded from the pulpit, this action being confirmed by an ecclesiastical council the following year.

Later Years

Despite his removal from the Church pulpit, Rev. Ebenezer continued to reside in the North Parish, which would later become the town of Boylston, where he practiced medicine for several years. He must have maintained close ties to his former church as a record book of the church kept by Rev. Ebenezer from 1743 to 1790 is now in the possession of the New England Historic Genealogical Society, portions of which were published in the Register 77:17-33 (1923). He died January 3, 1802 in the North Parish (Boylston, Mass.).
