Facts and Events
[edit] ScotlandBorn on the Hebrides island of North Uist. According to the obituary of his wife, Flora McPhail, the family may have spent time in the Lowlands of Scotland. There is no sign of the family of Donald McLean in the 1841 census of North Uist or in the parish registers, although many island births and marriages are known to have been missed on these registers.
[edit] Emigration to CanadaThe family of Donald McLean traveled on the ship Cashmere from Glasgow in the summer of 1849. There is an existing ship's list on which the Donald, Flora and children Donald, John, Archie, Lachlan, Mary, Alexander and Ewen (Hugh) appear. The passengers on this ship are said to be from Lord MacDonald's estates on North Uist.
[edit] Settlement in OntarioThe family spent their first year in Aldborough Township, Ontario before settling in Brooke Township, Lambton County.
[edit] ReligionThe family were Presbyterian Gaelic speakers. In the early years, they traveled to Mosa Presbyterian Church in Kilmartin for services. Later, when a log church was built on the 9th concession of Brooke they attended services there. The first generation of the family to settle in Canada is buried near the Mosa church. |
