Docia Ann Clark was born April 12, 1846, in Clinton County, Indiana, near Indianapolis. In the year 1876 she was united in marriage to Jackson Cook, a Civil War veteran, and to this union were born Manley Cook, Gove, Kansas, Arvilla Longwell, Ignacio, Colorado, Walter Cook, Hays, Kansas, George Cook, Orion, Kansas, Edith Loyd, Cortez Colorado. Her companion Jackson Cook departed this life March 18, 1886, and that left the little mother to struggle along to raise her family with the help of her stepson Harley Alfred and her stepdaughter Ida Susan. For 52 years she lived a widowed life, breasting the storms and joys that came her way. On Monday, Dec. 20, 1937, she began to ail and death claimed her on the 25th. To mourn her passing are five children, one stepdaughter, a host of grandchidren adn great grandchildren; two brothers, William L. and Thomas Clark, both of Seymour, Iowa; and other relatives. Mother Cook was a member of the Christian church since her girlhood days. She read her bible almost every day, and on Wednesday before she passed away she asked to the 27th Psalm and then the 23rd Psalm to be read to her. Yes, on Christmas day our dear Mother passed away, at the age of 91 years, 8 months and 13 days. *** Mrs. Docia Cook, who would have reached her 92nd birthday next April, died at her home near Orion on Christmas day. She had lived in Gove county for many years. Funeral services were at the Gove M.E. Church Tuesday afternoon with Rev. J.J. Cork as officiating minister. Mrs. Cork read the obituary, a mixed quartet--Mrs. Lloyd Jamison, Mrs. Fred Crippen, Lauren Mendenhall, Elmer Wigington--with Mrs. Dwight Burkhead accompanying at the piano, sang for the service. Pallbearers were F.A. Lewis, R.H. Mendenhall, L.O. Maxwell, Jud Summers, Frank Scott, B.W. Litton. S.A. Wilson of Quinter had charge of mortuary details.
