Diana Atherton

Robert Howard was born likely in Virginia or Maryland He married Diana or Dianah Atherton. Robert Howard was a soldier in the Virginia Continental Line and served 3 years of service which entitled him to a bounty land warrant issued by the state of Virginia to veterans as payment for military service. The allotment was determined by the soldier's rank and time in service.
Robert and Diana Howard were located at Muddy Creek, Ohio County Kentucky. The 1799 Nelson County Tax list (Ohio County need not become a county until 1800) includes Robert Howard Located at 100 Muddy Creek. He is also included on the 1800 Ohio County Tax List.
NOTE: Taken from an article about the Atherton family. John S. Atherton was born in 1825 in LaRue County, was a famer and slave-holder, and died in 1840. He was the son of Peter and Elizabeth Whithead, who came to KY from Virginia as early as 1790 or 1795, bringing 25-30 slaves. Peter Atherton was of English descent, was a Whig, uas under WAYNE in the Indian Wars, served as magistrate, and died about 1844, aged 72 years. Mrs. Maria Atherton was born in Nelson County and was a daughter of John and Elizabeth (Weaver) Beeler. SOURCE: KENTUCKY: A HISTORY OF THE STATE, Battle, Perrin and Kniffin, 4th ED., 1887, Nelson County.
Peter Atherton was related to Diana Atherton and likely a brother or cousin.
In the 1810 Census of Ohio County Kentucky Diana is listed as the head of the household. The house hold contained 3 boys under the age of 10, one boy 16-24, 3 girls under the age of 10 and 1 girl 10-16. I believe that Rober Howard died between 1805 when he appraised an estate in Ohio Couty (according to Ohio Couty Cout Record that I have on file) and 1810 when his wife was listed as head of the Household in that Census.
In the year of 1815 Diana Atherton Howard was married to William Leach. The Ohio County record--Marriage Entry 170: I certify that on the 16th day of Feb. 1815 the within named people William Leach and Diana Howard came before me and were lawfully married. Signed Lodowick Davis.
William B. Leach, who was born in Maryland, and when quite young came to Kentucky and settled in Ohio County. He first married Nancy Leach (not related). William died in 1863.
