David is most likely the grandson of Adam and Jane Short. He is not a son of their son Thomas, but is of an age to be a cousin to Thomas's children. His father is probably either John or William, although more research is needed to verify a connection.

According to family sources, David had a brother (or an uncle) who fought in the Revolutionary War under “Lighthorse” Harry Lee. This could be Jonathan Short.

According to a great-granddaughter, David Short owned a Chesapeake Bay boat.
