[Smoke-3Jun05_GM.GED] Source: John Ritz family file ROOTSWEB David was a cripple. He lived for a long time and died in Centre county, Pennsylvania. He had quite an experience one time with a huge panther as he was riding over the Alleghney mountains. The terrible creature dropped from the branches of an overhanging tree onto him, sinking its immense fore claws into the heavy continental overcoat that he wore. It was winter. The terrified horse gave such a leap and plunge that the panther lost its balance and fell off, rolling down the mountain side, carrying in its claws every scrap of clothing from his back, leaving awful scratches from which the blood ran down in streams. also tearing the flesh from the horse with its hind claws. He brought the clothes, same he then wore, back here (his father's homestead) the next time he visited in the cove, to let his friends see what a narrow escape he had had.
