David Alma Holdaway

1925 ~ 2013

David Alma Holdaway passed away at Our House Assisted Living in Provo on February 19, 2013 with his wife at his side. He was born in Provo on October 1, 1925 to Marion Russell Holdaway and Margaret Izetta Halladay.

He joined the U.S. Navy in November 1942 just after his 17th birthday. He served in both the European-North African and South Pacific theaters during World War II and was discharged in January 1946.

He married Barbara Eldredge on July 5, 1947 and 3 children were born to this union. They were later divorced. He married Shirley Saxton on August 6, 1971.

With the exception of a few years spent in Oakland, California as a young child and a few years as a teenager and young married man in Salt Lake City, he lived most of his life in the Orem-Provo area. He worked for 35 years at U.S. Steel's Geneva Works, retiring in 1986.

He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was a member of the Provo Fraternal Order of Eagles for several years and served as a trustee. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and had a hobby of gunsmithing and re-loading. He also became adept in cabinet building and restoring old furniture in later years and both he and his wife enjoyed working on such projects together.

He is survived by his wife of Provo, 3 children: Rick (Penny) Holdaway, of Spring Creek, Nevada; Patricia (Dave) Peterson, of Riverton; and Stacy Holdaway, of Beaver; 4 step-children: Jeff (Ann) Saxton, of Orem; Robin (Sam) Galbraith, of Lehi, Utah; Tim (Donola) Saxton, of Redfield, Iowa; and Melanie Dorton, of American Fork; also 6 grandchildren: Tiffany Gadd, Dan Holdaway, Nicole (Ashley) Brown, Brooke (Ethan) Wehrli, Mindy (Shane) Gurley, and Dennis (Natalie) Peacock; 13 step-grandchildren, and many great-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Deon Sorensen.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, February 23, 2013 at the Berg Mortuary of Provo, 185 East Center Street. Friends may call at the mortuary from 9:30-10:50 a.m. prior to services. Interment, Provo City Cemetery.
