NOT to be confused with David Gray (1754-1839) of Bucks County, Pennsylvania and Franklin County, Indiana. There are several Ancestry Member Tress that have confused the two David Grays that are not likely related.

Disposition of Land in Rockbridge County Records:

  • 1784 - 2 March, David and wife Ruth sold to David Rogers, late of the state of New York for 2.00 pds., a 200 acre plat in Rockbridge Co., VA. The plat had corners to Samuel McCrosky, James Love, and Moses Whiteside (Rockbridge Co. Deed Book A, p. 418).

  • Page 396.--23d April, 1751. John Gray's will, yeoman--Wife, Agness; son, Jacob; son, William; son, David; son, Joseph; son, Benj.; daughter, Ann Gray; son, Saml.; son, John; daughter, Elizabeth. Executors, son Samuel and John Lyle. Teste: Archd. Alexander, James McClung, Daniel Lyle. 27th November, 1751, proved by all witnesses, and both executors qualify, with sureties Archd. Alexander and James McClung.
  • Page 133.--The last will and testament of John Davison, being taken suddenly ill of a colick and departed this life the 11th of April, 1762, expressed these words (to wit): that all his just debts should be paid and Elizabeth, his wife, should have her share as the law directed, and all the rest to be equally divided amongst his four children--Thos. Paxton, David Gray. Proved, 18th May, 1762. Elizabeth Davison ( ) and Danl. Lyle qualify, with Thos. Paxton and David Gray. [Note: this record may indicate a relationship between David Gray's wife Ruth (some say she was a Davidson) and John Davidson, additional research needed to prove].

  • Vol. 2 - William Moore's Declaration, August 7th, 1832: Enlisted under Capt. Samuel Wallace, Lieut. Edmonson, Col. John Bowyer, Gen. Muhlenberg; he became Captain under Col. Samuel Lewis, Maj. Long, and Maj. McIlhaney. John Davidson deposes that he was a soldier under Capt. Gray at Yorktown, and Andrew Moore was a soldier. John McLane, aged 76, deposes that he marched under Capt. Andrew Moore.

Miller was his messmate; was born in Germany in 1762; emigrated with his parents in his second year and came to Rockbridge when six.
  • Vol. 2 - [undated, likely between 1820-1832] - Andrew Wiley's Declaration: Drove cattle under Thomas Vance to Point Pleasant in 1777; Colonels Dickinson, Gilmore, and Campbell were on this expedition; again marched under Capt.
