David Ross Conklin was born on 14 March 1839 in Reily Township (Butler County), Ohio and died on 6 February 1903 at Jerseyville, Illinois. According to his obituary, he probably never married and lived with his sister Laura and his parents for his entire life. Family legend says that he paid a volunteer to take his place in the Civil War.
