Disambiguation

Note: David Carlock MAY have been married twice (conflicting information). Some sources claim that he married 1) Anna Marie Lisemus in 1714 and that she died in 1725. Other sources have David Carlock marrying Anna Catherine Vollmer and possibly being the mother of two of his daughters: 1) Anna Catherine (most likely named after her mother), who married Joseph Starnes; and 2) Caroline, who married Frederick Starnes, brother of Joseph. More research may be necessary.

5. David3 Carlock/Gerlach (Hans2 Gerlach, Hans1) was born 1674 in Heidelburg, Baden Germany, and died 1763 in Augusta Co, Virginia. He married (1) Caroline?. He married (2) Anna Marie Lisemus 1714. She was born Abt. 1679 in Heidelburg, Baden Germany, and died Abt. 1725 in Augusta Co, Virginia. (Note: Augusta County was not established until 1738).

David Carlock/Gerlach feld to Holland, then to New York, and was found in Augusta Co, Virginia in 1741. In 1745 he sued Lawrence Washington, brother of George Washington, for non-payment of a bill. It apears that David had sold to Washington,

When the Palatinates landed in England ater Queen Anne gave them refuge, there were five chief's of the Mohawk Indian Nation visting her. Hearing of these people, the Indians volunteered to set apart certain lands in the Mohawk Valley in New York if the Queen would direct them to be taken there. Their detention was quite expensive for her, so she willingly accepted their proposition. After a long and perilous voyage, they reached New York with 3,000 Palatines. They were taken up the Hudson River to a point at and about what is now known as Newburgh. They belived this was the place to which they had been kindly invited by the Mohawks. They were actually 75 miles from the Mohawk Valley. Nevertheless, they settled in and began to bulid homes and villages which came to be named after their leaders: Weisendorf, Drnnerdorf, Schindtsdorf, etc. After these industrious people had greatly improved the countyside, unscrupulous men claimed all the land by former grant and they were forced to leave.

David Carlock/Gerlach is belived to be one of these immigrants. First they went to Schoharie, about 40 miles West of Albany New York in 1713. Again they were forced to leave and went to what is now known as Berks County Pennsylvania. These villages still bear German names. Around 1720 the Germans began to scatter around Pennsylvania, Ohio and into Virginia.

1. ↑ The earliest documentation that we have for David seems to be a listing of settlers on the Shannandoah River in Augusta County VA in 1735. (See: USGenWeb archives.) Court records show him living in Brocks Gap by 1735, when he is recorded by Justice Morgan Morgan as a settler in that area. It seems likely that he died in this area sometime after 1761, when he is listed in court records as being excused from taxation due to "age and infirmity".
2.   David Carlock is commonly identified as being a Palatinate who immigrated to the New World sometime before 1737. He is said to be related to a family of Carlock/Garlock/Gerlach who settled in New York by 1708 in the Palatinate immigration, but eventually moved south into Pennsylvania, and Virginia. Whether David was infact related to the early Palatine immigrant Carlocks, is not certain. However, in Virginia he is found in association with the Starnes and Goldman families who are also believed to be Palatines. On this basis it seems reasonable to assume that David was also from the Palatine area of Germany, but not necessarily part of the initial Palatine immigration of 1708.
   
   David's exact place and date of birth is uncertain, with different genealogists citing different places in/near the Palatinate, as well as different DOBs, clustered about the years 1674, 1679, and 1700. A discussion of this is provided at Palatinate Origin of David Carlock (1).
