Will of David Buchanan

From Chalkley's Augusta County Records:

  • Page 419.--13th March, 1815. David Buchanan's will--To wife, Susannah; youngest daughter, Betsey; to daughter, Polly Hanna; son, James; son, Hugh; to daughter, Peggy Walker; daughter, Betsey Buchanan; to son, George, executor. Teste: James Clarke, James Buchanan, Sr., Archibald Smiley, Samuel Armstrong. 2d May, 1817. Codicil--Wife Susanna is dead. Teste: Wm. Walker, Alex. Buchanan. Proved, 23d November, 1818 Executor qualifies. (Note: some sources claim that David Buchanan's wife was a "Sarah Wares", but the will above clearly names her as "Susanna". This is Susannah Weir, daughter of Hugh Weir and Margaret McEwen).


Early Land Acquisition in Augusta County, VA

Acquisition of Land from Chalkley's:

  • Page 182.--2d November, 1782. William Buchanan, of Augusta, Robert Buchanan and Margaret, of Montgomery, George Buchanan and Margaraet, of Washington, to David Buchanan, of Augusta. James Buchanan, father of grantors, died seised of a tract on Walker's Creek, 415 acres, and devised same to the grantors and grantee. Teste: James Weir, William Walker, Joseph Wear. (Note: James and Joseph Weir listed in this record were brothers-in-law of David Buchanan, which again provides evidence of David's marriage to Susannah Weir).

  • Page 379.--9th June, 1761. James Buchanan's will--To son Alexander Buchanan; to son Archibald Buchanan; to son John Buchanan; to sons Wm. and Robt. Buchanan; to wife Mary Buchanan; to sons Geo. and David Buchanan; to daughter Rebecky Buchanan. Executors, wife Mary and son Alexander. Teste: Daniel Nerrity, Jas. McCown, Wm. Scott. Proved, 19th March, 1765, by Daniel Harrison and Wm. Scott. Executors qualified, with Jno. Wallace, Jno. Buchanan. (Mary's mark ).
  • Vol. 2 - Marriage Bond in Augusta County - 1797--March 13, Wm. Hanna and James Buchanan, Jr., surety. Wm. Hanna and Polly Buchanan, daughter of David Buchanan (David Buckwhanen) (consent). Teste: James Hanna.
  • Vol. 2 - Page 115--David Buchanan, aged 56, deposes, same time and place (at Brownsburg, July, 1805), 415 acres were conveyed to his father, James Buchanan. (Note: this confirms David Buchanan's birthdate in 1749, and also confirms that the 415-acre tract in the Borden Tract was conveyed to his father, James Buchanan).
  • Vol. 2 - Page ___--David Buchanan, aged 57 years, deposes (26th April, 1806), ditto.
  • Vol. 2 - Page ___--David Buchanan deposes, aged 56, 15th July, 1805, son of James Buchanan.
