Facts and Events
Daniel Conkling, son of Joseph and Rebecca (Ross) Conkling was born on 21 July 1797 in Essex County, New Jersey. His wife, Priscilla C was born in 1801 in Sussex County, Delaware. Daniel worked in Cincinnati with his brother, David as a bricklayer and apparently did well since later city directories elevate him to the status of builder. At varying times, his sons worked with him as bricklayers. Daniel appears often in early Cincinnati deed records, buying and selling land many times. Land purchases included lots at the corners of Third and Walnut, Race and Fourth Streets and, George Street between Race and Elm. Later deeds were witnessed by his son, Oliver M. Conklin. In 1831, Daniel and his wife witnessed the will of his friend, Brittain Ross. The 1851 city directory shows Sylvester Conkling boarding with him. The 1853 city directory shows Daniel living at 213 W. Fourth Street and sons C.S., Oliver N., and Truman Conkling were boarding with him. Daniel was living at 19 Gorman Street in Cincinnati when he died on 9 July 1866. Early Cincinnati death records record his death. Daniel's wife, Priscilla was born in Sussex County, Delaware in 1801. After Daniel's death, Priscilla and her daughter, Fannie continued to live in the Gorman Street home. Priscilla died on 14 May 1883 in Cincinnati. Priscilla and Daniel are buried at Spring Grove Cemetery in Cincinnati. No will is found for Daniel, but Priscilla C. Conkling's will is housed at the University of Cincinnati archives. Priscilla's will is dated 31 May 1883 and names her daughter, Fannie M. Conklin as sole beneficiary. Priscilla signed deeds and her will with her mark. |
