Daniel Bury was born in Switzerland 10 May 1803. At age 21, it appears he immigrated to the United States aboard the Arethusa. Other Burys from Switzerland on the ship were: Andrew 30, Ann 32, Ann 2, Elizabeth 6 m,, Elizabeth 34, Jacob 3, John U (W) 30, Joseph 38 a physician. On 5 May 1833 he married Magdalena Lifelsperger in Springfield Lake, Portage County, OH. They lived in Preble, Mahoning and Stark counties in Ohio. In 1849 he purchased property in Cornersburg, Mahoning County, Ohio. John Bury of Connoquenessing Twp., Butler Co., Pennsylvania, held the mortgage for three years and then sold it to Johnathan Nier. They had four daughters, Caroline, Lovina, Sophia and Abbie.
Daniel was a weaver of coverlets. Three of his coverlets are at the Arms Museum, Youngstown, Ohio. He is listed in the Folk Artists Biographical Index, First Edition, Gale Research Company, Detroit, MI. and in A Checklist of American Coverlet Weavers, The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, Williamsburg, VA., pp 41-42.
Esther Hamilton author of 'Around Town' in the Youngstown Vindicator writes:
"Well, I seem to have run down Daniel Bury whose woven counterpanes have been attracting so much attention. Latest to turn one up was Mrs. Bert Smith. Bury was the great-grandfather of Dr. M.S. Blott (should be Mrs. M.S. Blott) and they have a little family history on him. He was born in Switzerland in 1800, died in Cornersburg in 1883. In 1838 he married Babb (her name was Magdalena) Leisenberger at Springfiled Lake, Ohio.
Children. They had four children, including Caroline, who married J.D. Strouse, grandparents of Dr. Blott (should be Mrs. Blott). Strouse ran a general store in Cornersburg on the site of the present Sparkle Market. He handled everything under the sun and made shows on the side. Lavina married John Hoover and their son, Charles, was a famous local painter of Mill Creek Park scenes. Abigail married John McCauley and their son, Charles, became a famous New York illustrator. What happened to the fourth child nobody seems to know.
The Blotts have one coverlet woven by Daniel. C. Victor Diebel reports he has a coverlet woven by Daniel and dated 1849. He bought it years ago at a sale in the old brick house still standing at the crossroads in North Lima...The Deibel coverlet is in wonderful condition consider its age, and apparently was made on a large loom, because there is no seam down the center. Deibel, from his research says Bury probably stayed in a community weaving coverlets until he had supplied the local needs, then took his loom apart and moved on; which was the custom of that day. The housewives would have carded the wool, spun and dyed the yarn and would have it easy for him. Only an expert could use the various weaves and make the numerous designs found on Daniel Bury's pieces.
Deibel's coverlet has a center design of grape vines with grapes and borders of birds, trees and old brick houses, all looking much like the North Lima house and one that use to stand in the center of Cornersburg. Three sides were fringed and the dyes were so good they have not faded."
He died 4 January 1884 in Canton Township, Stark County, Ohio, and is buried with his wife and daughter, Sophia, in West Lawn Cemetery, Stark County, Ohio. When he died he was a widower, and his probate indicates he had few assets.
