While there is a christening record for a Daniel Brookman in Burnett in 1783 which matches up to the 1861 census. This may be for a deceased sibling who died young as his father may have been a widower. The alternative is that his age on the 1851 census is listed incorrectly and the 1841 census was rounded to the nearest 5 years and had numerous errors.

Assuming that the christening record is correct the next question is whether Elizabeth Ashly who his father married 5 years after his birth is the same Elizabeth who is listed as his mother on the christening record.

Daniel apparently married twice and his first wife was Frances. Her name is gathered from a christening record in Whitchurch on the 8 October 1820 for an as yet, unnamed son.

  • On the 1841 census in Whitchurch his 15 year old son is living with him.
  • On the 1851 census in Whitchurch, he is aged 62 and his wife Elizabeth is 50, his son John is 27 and they have a daughter, Elizabeth age 1.
  • On the 1861 census in Whitchurch, he is aged 78 and his wife Elizabeth is 50 and they have 2 daughters, Hannah age 9, Ann age 7.

It seems highly likely that Daniel's second wife Elizabeth was Elizabeth Banfield based off a marriage record in Bristol in 1846 where a Daniel Brookman is listed as a widower.
