At age 17, he began teaching. He taught at Morris School, Bruceton, Snyder, Eglon. He later came toTunnelton on June 15, 1902, where he served as Principal.

At the time of his registration for the draft (World War I), 9/12/1918, he was serving as Superintendent of Schools, Mt. Hope Schools, Fayetteville, WV. He was listed as being "ruptured" on this document.

He later became President of New River State College in Montgomery, WV.
