Clara Kempson was born on 26th December 1875 at Luton in Bedfordshire, daughter of a straw hat sewer named Sarah Ann Kempson, formerly Smith, and her husband James Kempson, a bricklayer and plait bleacher. In the 1881 census Clara was living with her parents and siblings at Park Place in the centre of Luton. In 1891 the was family was living at Chobham Street to the south of the town centre and Clara was working as a straw hat finisher. Clara's father James was away from home on census night, being in St Albans Gaol. He was convicted many times for poaching and related petty crimes.

In 1895 Clara had a daughter, Emily Clara. The following year, aged 20, she married a straw hat blocker named Robert Albert Wiseman. Clara's daughter Emily subsequently used the name Wiseman in the censuses and when she married; it is possible that Robert was also Emily's father. Robert and Clara went on to have a further thirteen children together between 1896 and 1920.

Some of the children died young - in the 1911 census, Clara reported that of the ten children she had had at that point, only six were still living.

Clara's father died in 1915, and her mother in 1919.

At the outbreak of the Second World War, Clara, Robert and their youngest son were living at 124 Wellington Street in the centre of Luton.

Robert died in 1956, aged 83. Clara outlived him by just over three years and died in 1960, aged 84.
