Clara Kempson was born in 1876 at Luton in Bedfordshire, daughter of a straw hat sewer named Sarah Ann Kempson, formerly Smith, and her husband James Kempson, a bricklayer and plait bleacher.

In 1896, aged 20, Clara married a straw hat blocker named Robert Albert Wiseman. They stayed in the south Luton area where Clara had grown up, and had fourteen children, with the youngest being born in 1920, when Clara was 44 years old. Some of the children died young - in the 1911 census, Clara reported that of the ten children she had had at that point, only six were still living.

Robert died in 1956, aged 83. Clara outlived him by just over three years and died in 1960, aged 84.
