Christopher Marshall was born on 2nd May 1692 at St Ippolyts in Hertfordshire, son of Susan Marshall, formerly Hobbs, and her husband Nicholas Marshall, a yeoman. In 1707, aged 14, he was apprenticed to Richard Littleboy of the Cutler's Company in the City of London.

    Although the baptism does not explicitly record Christopher's parents' names, the entry appears immediately below and on the same day as George son of Nicholas and Susannah Marshall, and it is clear from court records from 1712 and Nicholas's will of 1737 that he had a son named Christopher.
