• Page 719.--18th November, 1764. Edward ( ) Gill to Solomon Whitley, £13, farming implements and household furniture. Teste: Christopher ( ) Best.

• Vol. 1 - AUGUST 21, 1766. - (216) Christopher Best and Hugh Galbreath, witnesses.

Records in Botetourt County, VA

• Botetourt Court Dec. 1779. No. 883 "I do hereby certify that Solomon Simpson, Edward Gill, Sr., Christopher Best, and Wm. Cross severally proved to this court that they served in the 1st Virginia Regiment, last war, as soldiers till it was disbanded, which regiment was commanded by Col. Byrd and Col. Stephens, and that they never before proved such service nor obtained any land in consideration thereof under the King of Britain's proclamation of 1763. A certificate for these claims issued formerly and is supposed to have been lost. Test: D. May, C.B.C.

• At a court contd. & held for Botetourt County the 10th day of December, 1779. - Ord. that the claim of Solomon Simpson, Edward Gill, Senr., Christopher Finnie, Wm. Cross and Christopher Best be certified who proved to this court that they respectively served as soldiers in the first old Virginia Regement commanded by Colo. Washington. BESS, BEST -

It is believed that Christopher Bess/Best is the migrant of all lines of the surname, "Bess" in Alleghany County, VA. He was born in 1734 in Nansamond County, VA and died in 1783 in Botetourt County, VA. He was a veteran of both the French-Indian War and the Revolutionary War. His wife was named, "Mary". He resided in the hamlet of Rich Patch which is an area of Botetourt County that eventually became Alleghany County.
