Origins

Research into her earliest life has been complicated by variations of her name on different records:

  • Feilbingert church records indicate a Maria Christina Dressel born May 06, 1783; but this same Christina is also shown to have died 7 June 1789 (#375) ("age 6 years, 1 month").
  • Feilbingert church records indicate a Maria Magdalena Dressel born 7 Apr 1790.
  • Feilbingert church records indicate a confirmation (done at the age of 14) for Christina Dressel.
  • Feilbingert civil records of her marriage identify her as Maria Magdalena Dressel
  • Feilbingert church records of her children's baptisms identify her as Christina Dressel.
  • She is Christina Betz on the passenger list.
  • She is Christina Betz on records in Buffalo.

Note that Magdalena's birth followed closely the death of her older sister, Christina. Germans of this era frequently named their children after a recently deceased child. In addition, Magdalena's maternal grandmother was Christina.

We have chosen to identify her as Maria Magdalena-Christina Dressel for purposes of this genealogy.

She was 65 at the time she emigrated with her husband and adult children to Buffalo, New York in 1845. She lived another seven years before dying in 1852. Her burial site -- likely somewhere in Concordia Cemetery -- has not been located.
