Christiana Tett was born in 1842 at Crewkerne in Somerset, daughter of a laundress named Susan Tett, formerly Forsey, and her husband Joseph Tett, an agricultural labourer. Christiana appears in each census from 1851 to 1871 living with her parents and siblings in the hamlet of Hewish in Crewkerne parish.

In 1865 Christiana married a James Tett, who may well have been a cousin. They had a daughter Rose shortly afterwards. The 1871 census finds Christiana and Rose living with Christiana's parents at Hewish, although James was away from home. In the early 1870s Christiana and James left Somerset and moved to Yorkshire, having two children at Widdop, a remote valley in the Pennines above Hebden Bridge, and then appearing in the 1881 census at Ramsden, another Pennine hamlet, south-west of Holmfirth. Christiana's brother Edwin was living with them.

Christiana has yet to be researched after 1881.

Although Christiana is described as unmarried here, she had actually been married for five years. The confusion probably arose because her surname had not changed; her husband was also a Tett.
