Charles Wright was born on 24th April 1828 and baptised a few weeks later at Wheathampstead in Hertfordshire. He was the son of an agricultural labourer called William Wright and his wife Sophia. Charles spent most of his life living with his parents and siblings in the Marshalls Heath / Cherry Trees area of Wheathampstead, appearing there in the 1841, 1851 and 1861 censuses. Charles also became an agricultural labourer.

When Charles was 35 he married Maria Hornet, who was four years younger than him. They had two children together, in 1864 and 1867. Charles died after only five years of marriage, at the age of 40. He was buried at Wheathampstead on 22nd November 1868. Maria outlived him by 38 years and remarried in 1871.
