    • ran a successful shipping business with his brother Alexander
    • also engaged in business of receiving indentured servants from Germany via port of Philadelphia
    • was a part owner of the Elizabeth Furnace, one of the first iron works in Lancaster, along with brother Alexander and Heinrich Wilhelm Steigel
    • married 1 Jan 1748/9 Ann Graeme, d/o Dr. Thomas and Ann Diggs Graeme
    • was one of the earliest subscribers to the Philadelphia Dancing Assembly in 1748
    • helped to start the St. Andrew's Society in 1749 whose first president was his father-in-law
    • began a 25 yr term as vestryman of Christ's church in 1752
    • began building the Powel House in Philadelphia, but wife Ann died in 1766 before it was completed
    • remarried in Sept [wife not named], but financial problems led him to sell off some of his business interests and to finally sell the Powel House in 1769.
