Was Brig. General. Served as commander of forces which captured and destroyed a fort on June 1780 Pacolet River; commanded with Shelby at Cedar Hill, commanded forces at Musgrove Hill and Cave Creek. His army was disbanded in September 1780 and he risigned his commission, but continued to support the patriots by manufacturing powder with the help of his wife, and secretly carrying it to the army for use at the battle of King's Mountain, October 7 1780 .
