At age 18 Charles and his cousin George came to America and Ontario in 1870.

They came to New York City and then by New York Central train to Marion to the home of Thomas Mitchell, who had imigrated to America a few years earlier. They found work on the construction of the Rome, Watertown, & Ogdensburg (RW&O) railroad between Ontario and Williamson. They lived in a boarding house on Kenyon Rd (formerly Orebed Rd).

In 1874, it is believed, that he returned to England and on April 9, 1875 set sail for the United States on the St. Holland with the his family, permanently. Some of his children had already come to America. The ship was steam and sail and the trip took 15 days.
