IMMIGRATION: Edie J. Duhon, THE DUHON HOUSE: A FAMILY RECORD; Broussard, LA: Fr*aca*la Publications, 1996; p. 27. "An attempt at deporting most Acadians at Halifax to Boston in 1762, failed because the Bostonians would not allow them to land. Following the signing of the Treaty of Paris in 1763, which provided the Acadians eighteen months to leave the English held territories, some charte[ere]d ships at their own expense that eventually brought them to the Louisiana shores." (Cites Brasseaux, THE FOUNDING OF NEW ACADIA, pp. 34 & 74)

IMMIGRATION: Did he come to Louisiana with the party led by BROUSSARD dit Beausoleil? He had two children baptized at St. Louis Church in New Orleans on 1 Dec 1765 (SLC, B5, 108). They were Jean Baptiste (age 6) and Marguerite (nearly 2 years).

!FATHER-RESIDENCES: Internet download of family coat of arms of D'EON (also written DION), copyrighted by Centre Acadien, Univ. Sainte-Anne, Church Pointe, Nova Scotia, Canada in 1996. Charles, son of Jean Baptiste DION also known as Lyonnais, was one of 13 children. Charles was imprisoned in Halifax until 1763, and eventually settled in St. Jacques, LA in 1766.

One of the witnesses was Charles DUON [but it could be the bride's brother.] (SM Ch.: v.4, #123).

On son Charles' marriage record on 11 Feb 1800, Charles DUON [Sr.] is not listed as deceased. (SM Ch.: v.4, #191).

It is probable that the three DUON brothers (Honoré, Charles, and Claude) came to Louisiana in late Nov 1765. The St. Louis Cathedral in New Orleans has records of baptisms on 1 Dec 1765 of children of Charles DUON & Marie Joseph(e) PREJEAN; sponsors included Claude DUHAN & his wife (Marie-)Josephe VINCENT. It is likely that Honoré was also with them.
Another posting by Elton J. Oubre (eoubre@charter.net) in Mar 2005 said: "The brothers settled in the present area of the Sunshine Bridge (the St. James/Ascension line). This settlement pattern would indicate arrival with the fourth or fifth group, LaChaussee or Bergeron."

Possibly around mid-1781, Charles acquired land in the area around the Jeanerette area extending southeast to an area known as Chicot Noir (where his brother Claude and son Jean Baptiste had acquired land). Apparently undated, the acquisition seems to have been for some 410 arpents. On 25 Jan 1782 they all sold their grants to Catherine TOUPART, wife to Mr. LOISEL and widow of Mr. BORREL. The families then migrated toward the Vermillion River, where Charles acquired a piece of property from Rene TRAHAN on 8 Dec 1782. TRAHAN had acquired it through a Spanish land grant dated 4 May 1776, and its location was situated on both sides of the Vermillion River, somewhat northeast of the present Pinhook Bridge. His neighbors were apparently Claude BROUSSARD, Olivier THIBODEAUX & Rene TRAHAN.
This property would have been within the most northern portion of Rene TRAHAN's land, and was situated on the eastern side of the Vermillion River, encompassing two sections of land, one in township 9 south, range 5 east, section 142, part of which borders on the Vermillion River; and the other section being in township 10 south, range 5 east, section 42, part of which is on Bayou Tortue. This places the property in the northern part of today's Lafayette Airport.

"At least ten Acadian families from the Bayou Tortue, Opelousas, and Cabannocé settlement occupied and acquired Spanish titles to properties in the Jeanerette area. Beginning approximately five miles above present-day Jeanerette and running to the Chicot Noir area immediately below Jeanerette's southeastern corporate boundary, this community, like its counterparts elsewhere in Attakapas, consisted of tightly knit family groups. And like their compatriots in the Central and Upper Teche Valley, these settlers, too, succumbed to pressure from hostile Creoles. On January 25, 1782, five Chicot Noir pioneer families sold their grants to Creole Catherine Toupart and migrated to the central and lower Vermilion valley.7" (Footnote 7 cites: Conveyance, Charles Duhon to Catherine Toupart, Vol. 3, St. Martin Parish Original Acts, in St. Martin Parish Courthouse. Conveyances also recorded on same date to her by Claude DUHON; François BOUDREAUX; Victor BLANCHARD; and Baptiste DUHON.)
On 8 Dec 1782, Charles DUHON was conveyed land by Rene TRAHAN, who had acquired the property through a Spanish land grant. It was located on both sides of the Vermillion River, somewhat northeast of the present Pinhood Bridge, bounded by neighbors Claude BROUSSARD, Olivier THIBODEAUX, and Rene TRAHAN. "This would place the property within the most northern portion of Mr. Rene Trahan's land, and thereby be situated on the eastern side of the Vermillion River, more specifically, encompasing two sections of land, one in township 9 south, range 5 east, section 142, part of which borders on the Vermillion River and another section being in township 10 south, range 5 east, section 42, part of which is on Bayou Tortue. This location places the property in the northern part of today's Lafayette Airport (Vol. 3, St. Martin Parish Original Acts).

From ESTATES AND WILLS LISTED IN ST. MARTIN PARISH, LOUISIANA, "Estates and Wills in the Original Acts, 1760-1805:" Charles DUHON, in year 1793, Original Act Book 14- Folio [page] 6.

  41. St. Mary Parish, Louisiana, Courthouse. Succession Record.

Succession record dated 12 Jun 1793 relating to selection of a tutor and curator for the three minor children of Charles DUON: Charles, age 18 years; Magdeleine, age 16 years; Adélaide, age 12 years. Names Joseph SOREL & their mother Marie Joseph PRÉJEAN; he signed Joseph SORREL, she made "ordinary mark."
A torn paper which looks like an inventory was also sent, amounting to 280--48--3, proved on 22 Feb [?] 1796 [may probably be for different estate].

No. 37, with "6" written over text. Could be Succession #37, on p. 6 of the 1793 records.

  42. Eddie James Duhon. Duhon House, The: A Family Record. (Broussard, LA: Fr*aca*la Publications, 1996)
    p. 34.

[The author claims a date of 12 Jun 1793 on this succession record, but upon reviewing a copy of the original, I find no date. Is there other paperwork I was not sent?]

  43. Eddie James Duhon. Duhon House, The: A Family Record. (Broussard, LA: Fr*aca*la Publications, 1996)
    p. 34.

"On February 27, 1812, his heirs did claim and inherit 134.30 arpents of land in Attakapas Parish, part of which is todays [sic] Lafayette Parish, on the Bayou Vermillion... It is assumed here that this land was the land purchased from Mr. Rene Trahan on December 8, 1782." (Cites American State Papers, p. 719)

Could this be for another Charles DUON?
