Chas.R.Cambell served as a wagoneer in the Civil War with the I Company of 73rd IL.Vol. from Laomi,IL drafted Aug. 9, 1862. 6'tall. B.17 Nov 1821, d. July 2, 1893 in Oswego City Cem. records. Wealthy farmer that Josie met while visiting her relatives. See Warren Co, IA Courthouse Marriage Book record: Barrack, Mrs. Josephine M., 40 to C.R. Campbell, 48 on 13 Feb. 1878.

Tina Rice (pd. researcher, Box 826, Parsons, KS 67357) obtained his CW pension records in 1984, and was working on a book of record for Oswego, Labette, KS cemetery that she stated had many, many Braught names. I did get several items from her in 1984.

Above Mary Luzetta (Braught) White grave stone at Pleasant Hill Cem., Oswego, KS is a small stone engraved Bobby Lee Campbell Sept. 25, 1938 stillborn. Probably a great grandchild of Charles Campbell, but I did not pursue more data of descendants at this time. Curious who was living there in 1938 named Campbell. To date I have only grave stone photos for a R. Glenn Campbell 1 Aug 1885-28 Oct 1925 adjacent to Bessie W. Campbell 7 Jan 1888-4 Sep1995. Relationship, etc. could easily be pursued from recent records there.

See photo of Charles R. Campbell and wife Josepine (Josie) Braught taken at Monroe Photos in Charlestown, Kanawha, VA is now WV.

Oswego, KS about his marriage age 57? contributed by Bea Romine 20 Jul 1997. At Oswego Cemetery we found adjacent stones to Josie and Charles of R. Glenn Campbell, b. Aug 1, 1885 d. Oct 28, 1975 and Bessie V. Campbell b. Jan 7, 1888; d. Sep 4, 1995. There was a Masonic Mutual Benefit Society of KS life insurance in his name benefitting wife Josephine.

Email from Cathy Zigweid (czigweid.spinn.net) Sep 2000 advised that she had his pension records stating his birth date and place, his first marriage, and some family data. The data of children mentioned here are mostly from her report. She has photos of their gravesites, which is interesting as it would appear that the gravestone for his second wife, Josie Barrack Braught, also shows his name as though he was buried there with her (seems rather logical in this case). I wonder if Charles may have purchased a joint name stone at the death of Mary (his death date merely added there later). Even more intriging is the notion that he may have been a bigamist, as it seems his funeral was with his first wife and family, plus obit. comments infer that he always lived with his first wife. Of course, that could have been an arrangement between his two wives, etc.. Curious at least.

25 May 2004 Email from Cathy (Campbell) Zigweid [czigweid@comcast.net) said that Charles R. Campbell was her gggrandfather. She said that his first wife was Mary E. Gibson who died 23 Jun 1876. Then he married Josephine A. Braught Barrick on 13 Feb 1878. Since her prior contact she located a journal that Wilburn W. Campbell kept when a young man. It seemed that the children did not approve of Chas.R.Campbell's second marriage, which might explain his name on two different grave stones. However, Josephine also had her name on two stones, so it may have been a simple effort to clarify genealogy data. Cathy suggested that my photo of Charles R. and his wife at Kanawha is probably his first wife, Mary, since they were married in Kanwha County (West) VA. She said she had C.R. Campbell's military records with vital data, photos, etc. She requested a copy of the photo, which I could not do at the time until she supplied her mail address.

Caution (not logically the same man)! 1850 Census for Sangamon Co., IL #646/646 shows Campbell, Charles, 26 Farmer born in VA with Mary (Gibson), 22 born in KY and Sarah age 7/12 born in IL. 1860 Census for Sangamon Co. taken 3 Sep 1860 in dwelling 1,356, family 1,285,stamp pg 624, page #120, 17th subdivision, Laomi, IL post office. C.R. Campbell,37 farmer born WV value of real estate $3,400 with person estate of $700. M. (Mary) 32 yrs. born KY, with W.W. Campbell, age 4, born IL; A. Campbell, age 2 born IL; M. Gibson, age 71 born KY L/J. Alsbury, age 80? (unclear) born VA. On an affidavit of family history signed by Harey G. Campbell and Elizabeth Campbell Desper, it says that Charles and Mary had 8 children, but only two (Wilber, born 22 Feb. 1856; and Abba Campbell Potter, born 10 Aug. 1858) survived infancy.

Cathy also shared data from a widow's pension application as follows: spouse, Mary Elizabeth Gibson, born 14 Feb. 1826 near Lexington, Fayette Co., KY was among early settlers of Sangamon Co., IL about 1825. Her father; William Gibson 1780-1838 and mother Mary (Polly) Holman 1789-1869. From Earlyl Settlers of Sangamon Co., pg. 1869 is listed her sister, Abigale Gibson Brown. See considerable more data on this family from Cathy Zigweid in my Josie Braught hardcopy folder.
