Biography of Charles Ross Browning

Charles Browning was born Jan 20, 1862 at Llewellyn Park, Orange, New Jersey[17]. He was the son of Ross C Browning and Katharine Hamilton. He was a 1883 graduate of Cornell University and a member of Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society and the football team[7][16]. He was a retired president of the former Buckley New Hall Company and Mutual Trading Company, New York household furnishings merchandisers. He married Augusta Clark of Ithaca, New York on October 6, 1887. They lived in Llewellyn Park, Orange, New Jersey where he had lived with his father since after the civil war. According to NJ City directories, Charles and Augusta purchased their home on Wildwood Way in Llewellyn Park sometime between 1891 and 1895.

Llewellyn Park

The following description of the Charles R Browning home on Wildwood Way by Henry Whittemore is described in detail:

"Mr. Browning and Agusta's home in Llewellyn Park was on Wildwood Avenue, near the entrance to Llewellyn Park. Most of the houses in the Park were built during the late 1800's when people looked more to the interior than exterior design and the architectural features were a matter of secondary consideration. His home, almost at the entrance of the Park was a building which, although modeled after the fifteenth century style, combines the latest improvements in architecture,. The foundation, which rises some two or three feet from the ground, is of rough-faced trap rock, quarried in this vicinity. The first story is of brick and above this the structure is formed in panels of stucco and wood, the whole surmounted by a pitch or Gothic roof. The interior, both in style and finish, is made to correspond with the exterior. The site selected for the building was well suited to the style of architecture and required no grading or additional tree planting. The smooth level lawn was left in pretty much the same condition as it was when the Park was laid out originally. A pretty bed of rhododendrons and azalias have been added to brighten the surroundings, and the shade trees which form the frame-work are a sufficient distance from the house not to obstruct the view or cause dampness in the interior"[14].

He was an original member of the Essex Country Club. They had three girls, Katherine, Marjorie, and Dorothy. He was affectionately called "Bop" by family members.
