"Mary Wilkins Family Came to US on Sailboat after 6 week crossing w/mother & 2 brothers. Her father was dead. One brother Henry was already in Illinois (blacksmith) Mother married - Hoppe (sic) and one other person earlier. Hoppe was killed by Sastrun in fight. She went to Illinois about 1901 (age 87) to help widowed son Henry. Died about 1902 and buried in Illinois." From family notes written by Bob Damon Passenger lists show Cathe. Wilkens age 48 with, Henry age 24, Friedrick age 19 and Maria age 7 crossing from Bremen to New York on the ship D.H. Waetjen; arriving 19 July 1869. Destination was listed as Illinois. This information suggests it was August who arrived earlier rather than Henry. August would have been 23 when the rest of his family arrived. Henry indicates, however, that he immigrated in 1862 in the 1900 Census... "Elaine (Lois Elaine Wilke) called to tell me that she's pretty sure Catharina had her own homestead, separate from Hoppers--and that she also had the impression it was east of the Wilke farm, in the foothills. Granddad (Carl F. Wilke) told Elaine that it was located on an old Indian route/path, and that, "back in the day," Catharina would feed Indians who passed by on the path." -bjb References
