Catherine Cox was baptised on 5th February 1837 at Barnack in Northamptonshire, daughter of a dressmaker called Catherine Cox, formerly Mason, and her husband William Cox, a blacksmith and farmer. Catherine appears in both the 1841 and 1851 censuses living in Barnack with her parents, siblings, and paternal grandmother. Her grandmother died later in 1851. Her father died in 1856.

On 12th September 1860, aged 23, Catherine married a baker called Matthew Wood, who was from Stilton, about fifteen miles south-east of Barnack. They married at Barnack, but then settled in Stilton after their marriage. Matthew and Catherine went on to have four sons at Stilton between 1861 and 1871. The 1861 and 1871 censuses each find the family living on the main road in Stilton.

In 1871 Matthew was described as a glover's assistant rather than a baker. It is possible he was already ill by that time and so was unable to do the more physically demanding work as a baker. He apparently suffered a 'long affliction', and died at Stilton on 15th June 1871, aged 34. Catherine appears to have been pregnant when Matthew died; their youngest son would not be baptised until three months after his death.

Back in Barnack, Catherine's mother died in 1876.

Catherine continued living in Stilton for some years after Matthew's death, appearing in both the 1881 and 1891 censuses in the village working as a cook and with some of her four sons living with her each time.

Catherine has not been found in the 1901 census, but by that time her sons had all moved a long way away from Stilton; they were living in Manchester, Leicester and Derby in 1901.

The 1911 census finds Catherine living in Nottingham with her son Arthur and his family. She appears to have lived in Nottingham for the rest of her life. She lived to be 96 years old, and died in Nottingham on 24th May 1933. She had been a widow for about 62 years.
