CarltonS2 was born at home.

Carlton was a 1939 graduate from Silver Creek High School and then attended Dunkirk Business Institute. He was a streetcar driver before entering the army to serve in WWII as a member of the 91st Infantry Division. He received the Bronze Star while serving in Italy. The incident for which he was cited occurred April 28, 1945 near Barbarana, Italy. His Battalion, advancing rapidly along the highway toward Treviso, Italy, was suddenly halted by heavy machine gun fire from enemy positions in the hills flanking the roads. The commendation reads, "With this strong enemy force threatening their progress, Pfc Gilray and another soldier, without thought for their personal safety, immediately volunteered to reach the hills and destroy the enemy. Disregarding the intense enemy machine gun fire, Pfc Gilray advanced forward and with hand grenades destroyed the machine guns and forced the enemy to surrender. Then Gilray placed accurate rifle fire on an enemy mortar position and after wounding one of the crewmen, the remaining enemy troops surrendered. His courageous initiative and devotion to duty reflect great credit on himself and on the armed forces of the United States." Carlton returned home to Sheridan with his family and ran the Sheridan Garage with his father for many years until he became Postmaster of the Sheridan Post Office. He retired in November of 1987. - Marjorie (Gilray) Crosgrove
