    RESIDENT OF 40 YEARS DIES
Carl Stephan, Sr., Resident Here Since 1880 Dies after Short Illness Due to Old Age.

Funeral held Tuesday from Catholic Church -- Father of County Treasurer August Stephan.

Carl Stephan, Sr., a resident of this community since 1881, died at the home of his son, August, in this village, Saturday, September 11, after an illness of only four days. Death was due to the infirmities of age. The funeral was held from the Catholic church, in this village, Tuesday morning, Rev. Father Britcher officiating and interment was in the cemetery of the church.

Mr. Stephan was born in Proskace, Prussia, November 26, 1835. He was married in 1861 to Rosalia Schuster. They came to the United States and to Todd county in 1881. From that year until 1889, they lived on their farm in Long Prairie township. Since 1889 they made their home the greater part of the time in the village. Mrs. Stephan died in 1915. After the death of his wife Mr. Stephan made his home in this village with his son, August.

He is survived by the following children: Mrs. Mary Laumeyer, Mrs. Pauline Petre, Carl Stephan, Jr., Paul Stephan, Mrs. Clara Keiffer, Robert Stephan, and August Stephan. The latter is County Treasurer of Todd county.

During the years of his young manhood, he served in the German army, being three years a member of the 1st Cuirassier Regiment at Breslau. He took part in the various wars leading up to the establishment of the German Empire and had a long and interesting military record. Coming to America forty years ago he established his citizenship in this, his chosen country, and in the quiet and modest way characteristic of many others who have sought our shores, made the most of the opportunities that came to him, and in so doing helped in ways which though quiet and modest, were nevertheless permanently effective in building up the country for the benefit of all. Mr. Stephan will be kindly remembered by all who knew him.
