Obituary

Obituaries for Thursday, Oct. 25, 2007
Port Arthur News, Port Arthur, Texas

Carl Armstrong, a resident of Vinton, was reunited in heaven with his mother, father, brothers and sister on October 21, 2007. He passed away at the age of 87 after a long illness. He left behind his loving wife Berta (Benoit), to whom he was married for 54 years; his daughter and son-in-law Annette and Alex Berksan of Austin, Texas; his granddaughter Lauren; and numerous nieces and nephews in Georgia.

Carl was born on June 17, 1920, in Cartersville, Georgia, to Lula (Hulsey) and Matthew Floyd Armstrong, Sr. His four siblings preceded him in death: John Armstrong, Alvin Armstrong, Ruby Armstrong Richards and Matthew Floyd Armstrong, Jr.

In high school, Carl excelled in football, basketball and baseball. After graduating from high school, he traveled around the country playing baseball for teams in Arkansas, Georgia, and Florida. He joined the Chicago Cubs in 1941, where he played in the outfield because of his strength as a batter. He was known for yelling, “Yetta boy, kid,” from the opening pitch until the last man was out.

Carl enlisted in the Army Air Corps the day after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He served as a Sergeant in the 3704th Army Air Force Base Unit, stationed in San Marcos, Texas, and was honorably discharged at Maxwell Field, Alabama, on December 10, 1945. After the war, Carl returned to the field, playing baseball in Alabama, Louisiana, Cuba and Florida.

Carl and Berta were married in 1953 and settled down in Port Arthur, Texas. Carl received a degree in Physical Education from Lamar University in Beaumont. He retired from Texaco in 1981, after 30 years of loyal service. In retirement, his hobbies were playing golf and pulling weeds in his yard.

Visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 24, 2007, at the First Baptist Church in Vinton, Louisiana. Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 25, 2007, at First Baptist Church in Vinton. Chaplain Robert Tatum will officiate the services. Assisting will be Rev. Tim Linscomb of Calvary’s Purchase in Orange, Texas. A graveside service with full military honors will follow at Big Woods Cemetery.

Carl will be honored by Joe Ingalls, Nathan Ingalls, Jamie East and Tim Linscomb, Jr., who will serve as pallbearers.
