After graduating from high school, he traveled around the country playing baseball for teams in Arkansas, Georgia, and Florida. He joined the Chicago Cubs in 1941, where he played in the outfield because of his strength as a batter. He was known for yelling, “Yetta boy, kid,” from the opening pitch until the last man was out. Carl enlisted in the Army Air Corps the day after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He served as a Sergeant in the 3704th Army Air Force Base Unit, stationed in San Marcos, Texas, and was honorably discharged at Maxwell Field, Alabama, on December 10, 1945. After the war, Carl returned to the field, playing baseball in Alabama, Louisiana, Cuba and Florida. Carl and Berta were married in 1953 and settled down in Port Arthur, Texas. Carl received a degree in Physical Education from Lamar University in Beaumont. He retired from Texaco in 1981, after 30 years of loyal service.
