Facts and Events
According to her obituary from an unidentified paper, Bridget Elizabeth (Connolly) McEnery was a member of the Third Order of St. Francis, the Ladies Catholic Benevolent Society, and the Rosary Society. When her husband died in 1879, she was left a 30-year-old widow with nine children. She ran a grocery store in Belleville, Essex Co., N.J. According to the 1887-89 Orange, NJ, Directories [as abstracted on Ancestry.com] it was located at the corner of William and New Bridge Street. The reports of the Belleville Overseer of the Poor list purchases from her. They also list purchases of meat from her father or brother. At the time of the 1905 census, Harry Hoag (b. Oct. 1889), and Edward Lancey (should this be Glancy?) (b. Nov. 1892), both students, were living with the family, as was the widow, Sarah Glancy, (b. Ireland, April 1860). Harry Hoag, who was still living with the family in 1910, may be the Harry Hoag who was an inmate of St. Mary's Orphan Asylum, Newark, in 1900. Image Gallery
