Blanche Smallridge was born in 1893 at South Brent in Devon, daughter of an agricultural labourer named George Smallridge and his wife Annie. Blanche appears in the 1901 census living at 21 Church Street in South Brent with her parents and siblings. Blanche's mother died in 1909. The 1911 census finds Blanche working as a domestic servant for a retired oil store manager and his wife in South Brent.

In 1912, aged about 19, Blanche married Harry May, from Plymouth. They appear to have had two sons born in Plymouth. Blanche died in 1919 aged just 26, leaving Harry looking after the two boys. The following year Harry married Blanche's younger sister Lily.
