Bertie Martin was born 10 years to the day after West Virginia became a state. In 1892, she married one of her former teachers, William G. Conley. As the 18th First Lady, she redecorated the Governor's Mansion, adding outdoor gardens and artistic furnishings. On Berties's 59th birthday, June 20, 1932, she and her husband dedicated the new state capitol building. After leaving office, the Conleys remained in Charleston and moved to a nearby house on Virginia Street, where she died on October 29, 1939.
