Bertie Kempson was born in 1882 at Luton in Bedfordshire, son of a straw hat sewer named Sarah Ann Kempson, formerly Smith, and her husband James Kempson, a plait bleacher and bricklayer.

In 1907, aged 25, Bertie married a Rose Muskett. They had one daughter, Eva, but sadly she died aged six in 1915. Bertie and Rose do not appear to have had any other children.

Bertie died in 1925, aged 43. Rose outlived him by about 19 years.
