Bertha was 9 when the photo was taken. Her father was born in Pennsylvania and her mother in Germany. In 1900 the family was living on South Park Ave. (now Martin Luther King Jr. Drive) in the Riverdale area of Chicago, and her father was a blacksmith. He died the year before the photo was taken, and her mother died the next month (Oct. 1903).

Bertha was probably adopted and her name changed, I do not find her after 1900. Her brother Benjamin turns up adopted by a family in Mansfield, Ohio, and her brother Arthur (I think) reappears with his own name in 1930. Her youngest brother Edward was also probably adopted and his name changed.
