Following his father's death in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, Benjamin Shacklett was appointed as one of the executors and was sworn, March 1, 1810. After the estate was settled, the children emigrated to Meade County. The John Wimp family accompanied them. They landed at Solomon Brandenburg's Landing and Ferry, which was called "Buzzard Roost," bringing their household goods, stock and supplies with them. They paid for their land with bar iron, castings and mill stones, the latter quarried and dressed by themselves at their father's quarry in Pennsylvania (Laurel Hill).

Ben Shacklett served in the militia during the War of 1812, organizing his own militia company, enlisting as a Captain. The company was officially known as Captain Benjamin Shacklett's Company, Kentucky Mounted Volunteer Detached Militia. Another source states that on November 9, 1801, Benjamin Shacklett achieved the rank of Captain in the 3rd Regiment and on December 12, 1804 was promoted to Major in 2nd Battalion, 3rd Regiment. Ben's brother Blancit Shacklett, is also listed as a member of Captain Benjamin Shacklett's Company.

From Gen. Samuel Hopkins's Wabash Expedition [unsourced letter]: "General Hopkins led expedition for purpose of penetrating the Indian Country as far as Prophet's Town. . . . Three regiments of Kentucky Militia commanded by Cols. Barbours, Miller, and Wilcox. . . . a small company of regulars commanded by Capt. Zachary Taylor. . . . General Hopkins particularly thanks Gen. Butler, Col. Taylor and also Capt. Zachary Taylor, Cols. Miller and Wilcox and to Major Hughes and Major Shacklett, dated Nov. 11-22, 1812."
