FAMILY HISTORY OF BENJAMIN MCLUEN--written by a family member.
Ben's great-great grandfather was born in the Highlands of Scotland in March 1802, and migrated to Roscommon County, Ireland where he met and married an Irish lass Bedelia Nary (or Neary). They came to the U.S about 1833 and settled in OH, where they resided until 1856 when they came to IA and purchased unimproved and which they began cultivating and improving--this entire portion of the state was an almost undeveloped and unimproved region. They had eight children one of which was born on the high seas but in U.S. waters. Our great grandfather George Washington McLuen was born to them on December 23, 1835 in Noble Co. OH. James McLuen died 2/3/1879 and Bedelia on 6/11/1899. George learned the miller's and carpenter's trades and in 1855 he married Hannah Louisa Reed, who was born in Knox Co OH in 1848, one of ten children born to Samuel Reed, who was born in OH 10/15/1807, and died 7/8/1882, while his wife, Mrs. Anna Rose Reed, whose birth occurred in OH on 12/15/1813 passed away 11/20/1890. They emigrated to IA in 1858 and purchased a large tract of land which their sons farmed. Mr. Reed owned and conducted the first hotel of Guthrie Center. George McLuen had four children one of which was grandfather Benjamin Franklin McLuen, who was born 6/25/1865 and died in 1913 from blood poisoning. He was a farmer and married Anna Eliza Lemon on 5/5/1877, daughter of Michael McConnah Lemon and Jane McCutcheon Lemon. Michael Lemon was a captain during the civil war. The Lemons had come from PA by oxen team in 1857 to Crawfordsville IA and later moved to Guthrie Co. via covered wagon. They forded the Des Moines river at the present site of the Des Moines post office. Getting back to the Benjamin F. McLuen they had six children one of which was Rex McLuen who had a twin brother Ray. Rex was b. 3/21/1888 and d. in Atlantic 5/22/2968. Ruth was b. 1891. They had two children William Benjamin and Lake Lucille. Lake married Lloyd Peterson and they had 4 children.
