Named after his mothers late brother. In the records of his baptism he's named "Tsjerk", this is due to the rewriting of the book from Sexbierum (DTB 106).

Barend Hiddes de Vries served the Admiralty of Friesland as Captain.

Anglo/Dutch wars

On 13 JUN 1665, due to brave behaviour, he's been promoted to Captain over the ship "de Postillon van Smirna" know from the battle at Lowestoft and this same year as captain of the "Zevenwolden" at a trip to Bergen in the group of admiral de Ruyter. At the Battle of Lowestoft, he commanded the "Postiljon van Smryna" (40 guns) in Auke Stellingwerf's Fourth Squadron. At the Four Days Battle, he commanded the Elf Steden (54 guns) in Person:Tjerk De Vries (1)' squadron when his brother Tjerk De Vries (1) died commanding the Groot Frisia in the same battle. At the St. James Day Battle, Barend Hiddes de Vries commanded the Elf Steden in the same squadron. In June 1667, his ship, still the Elf Steden, was lying with the Friesland squadron in the Konings Diep. This is the last instance where Barend Hiddes de Vries is mentioned, at least in Brandt's biography of De Ruyter. In 1674 under Cornelis Tromp he's mentioned being part of a raid along the Fench coast.

d.d.26-3-1667:After his second wife Ittie Jans, the children went to his sister in law Jetske Jans, who was married with Jacob Tjebbes. d.d.21-12-1666 named as curator over the orphin children of his famous brother Tjerk Hiddes. On 1 APR 1679 as a curator he buys the farmhouse "Jisma" in Wynaldum for the two sons of his late brother Tjerk hiddes

On his grave : "Anno 1680 den 20 Majii is gestorven Beerent Hiddes de Fries,capitein van 't College ter Admiraliteit in Friesland,oud in 't 58 jaer en is hier begraven."
