FALMOUTH - Dr. Artemas J. Stewart, 90, a surgeon in the military in private practice, died Tuesday at Royal Megansett Nursing Home in North Falmouth.

He was the husband of Jean (Hayward) Stewart and the late Phyllis (Robinson) Stewart.

Dr. Stewart was a 1925 graduate of Lowell High School, cum laude, and colonel of the regiment. He graduated from Harvard College in 1929, cum laude, and Harvard Medical School in 1933. He interned at Hartford Hospital, Hartford, Conn., from 1933 to 1935.

He was a resident at the Free Hospital for Women, Brookline, in gynecology, the Boston Lying Inn Hospital in obstetrics and the Boston City Hospital in surgery until 1938. He established practice in general surgery in Lowell from 1938 to 1941.

After graduating from Harvard, he was a reserve officer to the Army's 7th Field Artillery, holding the rank of captain. He was called to active duty in 1941, transferring to the Medical Corps. He was promoted to major and served as assistant chief of surgery at Camp Edwards Station Hospital until 1942, then transferred to Camp Breckenridge, Ky., to form the 198th Station Hospital, which was sent to India. He then was chief of surgery at Nichols General Hospital, Louisville, Ky. for the 40th General Hospital, and sent to England for the 8th Air Force and for the 103rd General Hospital, at the time of the invasion of Normandy. After the war, he was chief of surgery at Camp Maxie General Hospital, Texas. He was discharged from the Army in 1946 and retired as a lieutenant colonel in 1949.

Dr. Stewart returned to private practice in Lowell. He served as secretary of the staff at St. Joseph Hospital and senior surgeon at Lowell General Hospital, where he was chief of the surgical department, president of the staff and member of the executive committee for 16 years. He was on the courtesy staff of St. John's Hospital and St. Joseph's Hospital, Lowell. He retired in 1983.

He was a member of the Ezekiel Hersey Council of Harvard Medical School, Trident Club at Harvard, American Medical Society, New England Medical Society, Middlesex County Medical Society, American College of Surgeons and the American College of Abdominal Surgeons. He was past master councilor of Lowell Order of DeMola a member of the William North Lodge.

During his military career, he was licensed to practice in the United Kingdom and served as a consultant in that capacity.

Surviving besides his wife are two stepsons, John G. Aldinger III of Falmouth and C. Robert Aldinger of Lowell a stepdaughter, Kathryn J. Aldinger of Warwick, R.I. and a granddaughter.
