Records of Archibald Mullenax in Augusta County, VA

From Chalkley’s Augusta County Records:

  • Vol. 2 - Marriage Bond in Augusta County - 1786--February 5, Archibald Mulinx and Mary Powell, daughter of Thomas Powell; surety, Wm. Urquhart; witnesses, John Mulinx, Thos. Cox. (Note: since Archibald's (supposed) father William had died in 1780, it appears that his uncle John Mullenax witnessed this marriage bond).

Information on William Mullenax

Security for the marriage of Archibald Mullenix and Mary Powell was John Mullinax (Mulnix), with consent of her father, Thomas Powell. Marriage license recorded in Augusta Co., Virginia. Archibald Mullenix served in the Revolutionary War as a soldier of the Infantry. He received a bounty land warrant. As late as 1794, Archibald was on the Muster Roll list of Pendleton County Virginia (now West Virginia) under Captain William James Company, Militia. Several spellings of the Mullenix name are found on Archibald's war records - Mollineux, Mullineax, Mulleneux, and Mulinx. Mulnix is found on his marriage license. The name spelled various ways in the old family records. "Moulenix" found on Indiana records. A number of Archibald's Mulllinax relatives also served in the Revolutionary War. They lived in Lower Crab Bottom, Allegheny Valley, which was first, Augusta County, later Pendleton and now Highland Co., Virginia. The Mullenix family was Methodist at an early date. Archibald is proven up in the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, under national number 403073. (Source: "My Virginia Kin")
