Archibald was the second child and eldest son of James Catanach and Christian Farquharson Sherrat. Archibald would have been named after the late Archibald Farquharson, laird of Finzean estate, who was his mother's uncle (or perhaps his son the present laird, also named Archibald).

Archibald grew up in Woodend, until about age 15, when he emigrated with his family to Wellington, Ontario, Canada, where they were early settlers of Nichol Township.
