Excerpt from Powell family history book, "After his discharge he again entered Mt. Union college where he had formerly been a student. He engaged in farming the next spring at which he continued a few years'then moved to Kent, OH where he entered the wood department of the Erierailroad shops. In 1884 he moved to Huntington, IN continuing in railroad employ as foreman. In 1902 moved to Monmouth, IL, in the employ of the Iowa Central RR Co., On account of failing health he resigned this position Nov, 1904, and moved to Wabash, IN hoping by rest to regain his health, but to no purpose-the end came soon.

Mrs Powell had also been a student to Mt. Union college, where theyfirst became acquainted, and taught in the public schools of Portage County, OH. In early life he entered the service of the church being first identified with that of his parents' but after his marriage united with the M.E. church of which his wife was also a member, continuing this relation to the end of his life. He was a member of the GAR Post at Huntington and also of the order of Masons, both of which participated in his funeral services."

  7. "Re-enlisted for three years Jun 6, 1861. The 4th was the first Ohio regiment mustered into service for three years. He participated in thebattles of Rich Mountain, Winchester, three days at Connellsville, threedays at Gettysburg, Mine Run, and was thirty days in the campaign of The Wilderness. While under fire at Cold Harbor was ordered to the rear by reason of expiration of time, Jun 5, 1864. He received but one slight gunshot wound in the hand through all these engagements. Though he suffered considerably from disease, having been brought home from West Virginia while sick of fever, and in the winter of '62 and '63 was in the convalescent camp at Alexandria, Virgina, for some time.
