Annie May Goslin was born in 1894 at Plymouth in Devon, daughter of a grocer's warehouseman named James Goslin and his wife Lydia. She appears in the 1901 census living with her parents and siblings at 31 John Street in central Plymouth. By 1911 Annie had left home and was working as a servant at a house on Western College Road.
Annie was married in 1915, aged 21, to a soldier named William Richard May, who was about 24. Annie's name thus became Annie May May - she had the same middle name and surname. As children Annie and William had lived a few doors apart on the same street; he had grown up at 21 John Street. They had one son, born in 1917.
Annie died in 1918, aged only 24. Her young son died later that year, aged seventeen months.
William married again just over two years later.
